Stag Lane First School

Edgware, Harrow

128

We organised a Father’s Day assembly, and for fathers, uncles, granddads etc to come and spend the morning with their children in school.

The day started with an assembly which was attended by 128 dads, then year-group photos were taken of dads with their children. We later made these into thank you letters as souvenirs for dads.

The children then toured with their dads around the school supervised by teaching assistants, and had tea and coffee in our staff room. Reception and Year 1 dads joined the classes for planned activities, and Year 2 and 3 dads watched the Tesco Great School Run (a 2km children’s fun run which took place in schools around Britain during the same week as Fathers’ Story Week) and even joined in with a lap themselves.

Then we laid on lunch for dads with their children in our new nursery building. It was a great morning!!!

Running a Father’s Day assembly, and for fathers, uncles, granddads to come and spend the morning with their children in school – this attracted 128 dads!

Taking year-group photos of dads with their children, which we later made into thank you letters as souvenirs for dads.

Just the sheer volume of dads. The previous dads I had had 25 replies and on the day, 128 dads turned up! It was a great response!!! Instead of individual photos that were planned, we took year group photos, tea and coffee had to be staggered too – but all went well despite huge numbers.

We have been involved in the Dads in Demand animation project, in partnership with the Fatherhood Institute and Campaign for learning. For this recruited sets of dads for three round of animations.

We are already signed up for Fathers’ Story Week next year, and hope to run animation projects next year ourselves, as through the Dads in Demand project, staff as well as dads were trained to use the equipment. Group of dads from animation project are now helping us in school, coming to support us and talking at events and conferences all over Harrow.
